I got all my sweet potato vines pulled out of the garden. I'm hoping the "potatos" will make it through the winter inside and then provide me with beautiful vines back out in the garden next summer!

This is Andy, Piper's new puppy. They wanted an indoor dog so they adopted him. They think he is about 4 months old and is a West Highland White Terrier and a miniature American Eskimo mix. His face reminds me of our Samoyed, Misha but she was quite a bit bigger than him. He is so cute!

As always, the salvage yard is nothing but fun! We didn't buy anything but really had a great time looking and taking fun photos. We are traveling home today. The weather is turning cold and I hear that it is snowing at home so I'm not really looking forward to it.

We called today "Day 2 of Kristin's birthday". We went to the bagel deli for breakfast and then headed off to the museum where Kristin wanted to see the Andy Warhol exhibit. We bought the family membership since it was only a few more dollars over the cost of the special exhibit and good for a year. We also got to see the Madeleine Albright exhibit "Read My Pins". We all enjoyed both exhibits and were surprised how much we enjoyed looking at the pins! For dinner, we cooked the shrimp that we brought from Corpus Christi last March. We made our favorite "the dump" that consists of dirty rice, sausage, corn on the cob, potoatos, and the shrimp. Yummy!

Today was Kristin's 26th birthday. We met her for breakfast at the "Donut Shop" and then she had to go to work for a few hours. Then, she chose Brugge Brasserie in Broad Ripple for dinner. We had Steak Frites and Moules Frites. 12 difference dipping sauces were supplied for the frites. Rich, Sierra, and Tyler also had some of the "divine juice of barley" by sampling the "Tripple de Ripple" We went to eat early to beat the busy Friday night crowd and then spent some time window shopping where the shops were having a "Holiday Preview".

We are all loaded up and ready to drive to Indianapolis for the weekend. We are taking grid wall for Tyler's new shop and taking the MTBikes back after Collegiate Nationals. Chase and Charlie are excited to go anywhere!

I'm not really sure why the cats think they have to drink from a dripping faucet but 3 of the 4 of them run upstairs if they think we are going to the bathroom. It's not like they don't have fresh water to drink from their bowl!

WOW - it was 73 degrees today! It was not a record though and they tell us our warm days are numbered, as in OVER.  As if we didn't know that. I think the burning bush is at its best so I took another photo. Tomorrow, it is due to cool down with rain later in the week. Hopefully, we won't get the snow that is in Wyoming and Colorado today.

Charlie usually comes to get me when he wants to go out for a walk. Sometimes, he waits patiently and sometimes he lets me know that he wants to go NOW! Could you resist this big, beautiful face?

We got almost everything cleaned up and put away for the winter. We decided to move some of the ceramic pots inside this year because some of them with delicate glaze were damaged last winter. We covered up the more "hardy" pots with tarps in the hopes that they will make it through in good shape.

Today, I spent a lot of time cleaning out the flower pots and beds. I got quite a bit done and it will really save me some time and work next spring. Charlie loves to lay in the sun outside and today he chose the soft discards from the garden. He can enjoy them before we burn them!

Today, we heard from the insurance adjuster. There is about $5000 worth of damage to my car. They are afraid that there will be more once they get into it. So, we can decide if we want to go ahead and have it repaired but if more damage is found, they will total it. Or, we can just total it now and they will give us $7500. Now, we just need to decide.......

Well.....it has been years so I guess it was my fate to hit a deer today. As I remember it, he was a HUGE buck! I remember his antlers, eyes, and perhaps a leg flying to my right up over the windshield as I hit him at 5:30 this morning. It was dark so hard to see the damage. We could tell that fluid was dripping from a couple of places and the air bag sensor was lit on my dashboard but they did not deploy. We had to have it towed and Rich stopped by the lot this afternoon to take a look. We hear that the air bags not deploying but the sensor light on is NOT a good sign. I would expect that since I do not want this car to be totaled, it probably will be. I am not looking forward to buying a new car! We also could not find the deer so maybe he really was huge, not just my imagination, and he survived for another day and/or collision.

Sierra sent me this photo of the "green monster" complete with all the dust stirred up by the racers. This happens to be the Elite Women's race during the USGP of Cyclocross - Derby City Cup in Louisville on October 24. Sierra raced in the 1/2/3 Women's race and got 6th.

Last night, we went to Becky & Denny's for a combo Halloween and football party. Becky sent a hand made invitation card that said: Come over for a RAVEN good time! The yard was completely decorated with skeletons, gravestones, and spiderwebs. 

Today, it was unseasonably warm. I decided to go on a bike ride with a destination in mind about 20 miles away. I rode from Cumming to Des Moines on the Great Western Trail, through Water Works Park and headed across this new rail converted bridge to find my way to the Inter-Urban Trail to Becky & Denny's house. To my surprise, the trail was not repaired yet from the summer flooding and I ended up on a dirt construction road to a dead end fence. I "bushwacked" around the fence and headed off on a sort of grassy mixed with mud holes trail/road. Down by the river, I met a disheveled man on an old beater MTB and he was glad to orient me by telling me we were in back of Broadlawns Hospital and that the paved trail was "right over there". I thanked him and was on my way!

Last night, we had our first hard freeze. This was a chartreuse sweet potato vine. I knew it was time but I wasn't ready yet!

Rich was off today and decided to make a pot of chili - an unusual event but tasty!

It was a bad summer for peppers, it was so wet that they simply did not grow. This fall, they finally got some dry weather but I had to pick them today because it is forecast to get beyond frosty tonight. I may have enough to can some for Kristin!

Rich and I went for a bike ride today from Madrid to Woodward on the new "High Trestle Trail". This bridge over the Des Moines River is the 5th longest pedestrian bridge in the world at 1/2 mile long and is 13 stories high. What a wonderful view!

I haven't ridden my "comfort" bike since last March in Corpus Christi. I got it out today and the chain was rusted beyond hope! I tried soaking it but finally gave in and put on a new chain.

The burning bush is just starting to turn here at home. In town, many are already completely bright red.

The wind came through one day last week and carpeted the ground with pine needles. Rich raked them up into piles and Charlie immediately used them as a soft bed.

I finally unwrapped a purchase from our trip to Las Vegas in September. Those who know me well, understand that I love pelicans. I got this little Ken Edwards stoneware pelican from a shop in Boulder City that we love to visit each year.

I got back from California today at 2 PM. I uploaded my photos and went to take a look at Marian's website to see if they had an update about Nationals and I see this article - complete with my photo of Sierra in the forest on the cross country course!

WOW! I stopped on I-80 east of Park City, UT on my way home from Truckee to see if I could capture the fall foliage colors on these mountain foothills.

Sierra, Sarah, and Brooke competed with each other all MTB season. Here they meet again at Nationals in the short track race!

The collegiate conference champions get called to the start line before the other competitors for the 20 mile cross country race. The representatives on the line with Sierra are from University of Vermont, Lees-McRae College, University of Colorado, and California Poly Tech.

Today, I met the MTB team at Northstar Resort outside Truckee, CA with the bikes. We got them put together and Alder and Sierra headed out to check out the cross country course. Here they stopped for a photo at Mid-Mountain.

I got to Utah around 7 this morning. It looks like Utah got new welcome signs since last year.

I left work today at 315PM and made it to Ogallala, NE for my first stop!

I couldn't resist and finally made up my mind! I'm leaving after work tomorrow to drive to Truckee, CA to watch Sierra and her teammates compete at Collegiate MTB Nationals. Mother and I went last year together and I will miss the fun that we had in Yosemite and Tahoe! 1614 miles each way, I'll be putting in a good audio book and driving 'til I get tired!

It was unseasonably warm today so I decided to drive to Lake Red Rock in search of pelicans. I was rewarded!


As I was looking over the photos I took today, I was trying to figure out what the nearly perfectly round thing was on this pelican's leg. Then, I noticed what looked like a string hanging from its head. I zoomed in and figured out that the bird has a fish hook stuck in the back of its head and probably a small sinker and line wrapped around its leg! :(


This is the last photo I took before leaving. I discovered after uploading the photos that the pelican in the middle has a fishing bobber in its beak! I only hope that the bobber was "thrown back".

Kristin crashed while mountain biking today. She went over the handlebars, scraped up her face and has a nice gash on her elbow. She didn't think she needed stitches on her elbow and is just sore tonight.

For graduation, Sierra wants a new MTB. The frame she wants isn't available yet so she has to settle for now with just the components and put them on her current frame. The parts came today and she is hoping to have the bike together tomorrow so she can get some riding in before traveling to Truckee next week.

At the Cycling Center today, Sierra was awarded her trophy for the Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference Regional Championship - Overall MTB Champion. This is a first award of this type for the Marian University Cycling Team. Coach Dean is so proud of all the members of the team!

Munch, munch, munch, repeat.

We were in Omaha today and visited DeSoto Wildlife Refuge on the way home. The birds are not migrating yet but we found this beautiful bronze eagle outside the visitor center.

Congrats to Sierra! Today, she became the 2010 Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference Overall Women's Champion. Because she had more total points than the men's champion, she chose this nice Oakley backpack as an extra prize given by the USA Cycling representative.

Sierra gets the hole shot and takes the early lead in the cross country race today! She won the race and is on her way to a possible Midwest Conference title in the MTB endurance category.
